Ground-handling Staff Launch Stir at CIAL

Kochi:  A section of ground-handling staff attached to a private agency at the Cochin International Airport Limited(CIAL) on Monday began strike, causing hardship to air passengers.

As many as 230 employees including 60 women staff attached to Khullar Hospitality launched the strike raising various demands. The contract workers who have been working for Air India have been demanding revision of their salary and other benefits in tune with the expiry of their current contract and renewal of new one.

Following the strike call, the Air India officials brought a batch of ground handling staff from other airports to CIAL to take on the strike and not to disrupt the routine baggage loading and unloading works of the airline. The Air India has subcontracted their ground-handling services at the airport here to the private agency. CPM district secretary P Rajiv inaugurated the strike and a march was taken out as part of the strike.
