New Delhi: IndiGo took under a decade to have a fleet of 100 aircraft and has now decided to expand its capacity by 33% of the current size in just a year. The low-cost carrier (LCC) will induct about 35 planes — a mix of Airbus A 320s and the plane's new engine option (Neo) version — by the end of fiscal 2016-17, at a rate of almost three planes every month. This is the fastest fleet augmentation in such a timeframe by an Indian carrier.
The growth plans of IndiGo, which has so far ordered 430 A320 Neos and was supposed to start getting them from December 2015, were hit when late last year Airbus informed its Neo customers that their deliveries would be delayed. "As of now, we are not sure of the revised A320 Neos delivery. We will induct 35 planes by end of March, 2017. About 33% of whatever we have done so far in the last 10 years will be done in the next 15 months," a senior airline official said. This clearly means the airline will pick up A320s already flying with other airlines from the leasers.
