Kannur airport facing land acquisition hurdle

Kannur: In the budget presented on Friday, chief minister Oommen Chandy announced the runway of the upcoming Kannur international airport would be extended to 4,000 metres.
This has given rise to the hope that it would be made into one of the best airports in the country.
But the announcement seems to be bit too over ambitious because of obstacles in land acquisition and also the financial status of the company, Kannur International Airport Ltd (KIAL).
Though Kial is not against runway extension, it could be done after taking into account various aspects, said Kial managing director G Chandramauli.
"As of now our plan is to make the airport operational with 3,050 metre runway and extend it to 3,400 metres in the next phase, but even on that front we face a huge challenge as the people are not willing to give even 75 acres for the runway extension purpose," he said.
