MLA’s claim casts a shadow over trial landing efforts

Kannur: While work is proceeding at a fast pace at the Kannur international airport project site near Mattannur, the allegation of E.P. Jayarajan, MLA, that the ongoing blasting at the site has caused damage to several houses nearby has cast a shadow over the efforts ahead of the anticipated clearance for trial landing, planned later this month, from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)
Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL) authorities have denied the allegation and said that the last phase blasting was carried out as per the stipulated norms.

Mr. Jayarajan demanded that a case be registered against the construction company, Larsen and Toubro Limited, alleging that it was engaged in illegal blasting. The MLA on Monday visited the houses at Kallerikkara near Mattannur, which allegedly suffered damages in the blasting. His warning that agitation against blasting would resume if compensation was not paid to the affected families has raised concern of disruption of works.
The work had been disrupted for nearly two months due to the earlier protest against blasting.
