Vijayawada: It will take more than two years from now for the completion of the expansion of runaway of Vijayawada (Gannavaram) Airport from the present 7,500 metres to 10,000 metres.
The airport authorities are expecting the state government to hand over the additional 698 acres of land required for expansion of the airport runway within the next two to three months. “We will start work immediately after we take possession of the land. It will take about 23 months for us to complete the expansion work,” an official of the Vijayawada Airport said.
Once the runway expansion is done, it would become easy for the airport to receive bigger aircraft like the A 300 air buses with a capacity of 260 persons. The present runway can take only A 321 airbus which has a capacity of only 180 passengers.
As the present runway is only 7,500 ft long, there are constraints in taking the A 321 airbuses with full capacity. It applies to both the luggage and the number of passengers. “We have to restrict the weight of the luggage and also number of passengers that we call load penalty for safe landing of the aircraft on short runway,” the official said.
