Ahmedabad: Mounting woes at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport has pushed it off the list of top airports that offer quality service to passengers. Ahmedabad airport, which ranked fifth in Asia Pacific region in 2014 in an Airport Service Quality survey carried out by the Airport Council International, lost its ranking for year 2015. Though the airport has the lowest user development fee in the country, issues like serpentine security check queues, unruly traffic, parking hassles, lack of stores and ATMs at the airport reflected in the survey, pushing authorities to fix the issues and gain better passenger reviews.
The ACI conducts the survey in various categories and regions annually. In 2014, it rated Guayaquil in Ecuador the best airport in the 2 to 5 million passenger category in Asia Pacific region. This was followed by Mauritius, Ottawa in Canada, Nassau in the Bahamas and Ahmedabad. In 2015, it surveyed over 300 airports across more than 80 countries. ACI ranked Jaipur first, followed by Lucknow and Guayaquil in the 2 to 5 million passenger category. Ahmedabad — which had scored 4.32 points in the 2014 survey —managed to get only 4 points in 2015.
The international council rates the airports - participating voluntarily to be part of the survey — on various factors essential for high customer service ratings including ambiance, cleanliness of terminals, comfort of the waiting areas, availability of washrooms, cleanliness of washrooms, helpfulness of the airport staff, passport or identity inspection experience and good shopping facilities. The airports are appraised by passengers while they are travelling and the experience is fresh in their minds.
