Domestic fares in economy class may not have defied gravity in the past one year, to the joy of the aam flyer. But are full service carriers (FSC) fleecing the exchequer with sky-high business class fares for routes within India?
Trinamool Congress MP Dinesh Trivedi has written to PM Modi, complaining about exorbitant domestic business class fares. "MPs, ministers and senior government officials are entitled to travel in business class and the state exchequer picks up the tab. A one-way business class ticket from Delhi to Kerala can cost as high as Rs 1 lakh," Trivedi told TOI.
For example, a one-way business class ticket from Delhi to Kochi for the coming weekend costs up to Rs 43,000. Similarly, a one-way Delhi-Mumbai ticket for the next weekend costs about Rs 4,000 in economy and up to Rs 21,000 in business. The MP says he has now started flying economy class, unless on the rare occasion when business fares are affordable. Apart from the state-run Air India, India has two private sector FSCs. "AI business class fares are usually not too high," said Trivedi.
