'Airport closure affecting tourism'

Margao: The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) has taken exception to the month-long routine maintenance of the airport runway owing to which it is closed for traffic from 10pm to 5am from March 1 to March 31.
Spokesperson Avinash Tavares told mediapersons on Wednesday, "All or most charters arrive in Goa during that time slot. This is happening for the second year during the tourist season. Is defence minister Manohar Parrikar tacitly using Navy to cause inconvenience to charter flights to build a case for Mopa or Does defence minister Manohar Parrikar want to kill the already dwindling overseas tourist traffic to Goa?"
Tavares further questioned the need for a 31-day repair "when the runway was freshly laid in last May with a 10-year guarantee which was again repaired in October."
"Congress demands a third party audit into why Dabolim airport's runway needs to be shut so frequently for maintenance, and why these repairs are not undertaken in the off season," Tavares said.
