Ban on kites, gliders near airport

Mumbai: The police will take action against anyone found flying kites in the "free-flight zone" around Mumbai airport. Paragliders, balloons, laser illumination and crackers have also been banned in the zone under a circular issued by the police.
"The order has been issued after noticing gliders, balloons, light objects, kites around the approach of funnel of runways and lasers being flashed towards the direction of landing aircraft. This is a necessary precaution in the interest of flyers," said deputy commissioner (operations) Sanjay Barkund.
On January 8, the Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd wrote to deputy commissioner (zone VIII) Virendra Mishra complaining about crackers, kites and aerial objects around the airport. On December 29, 2015, an aircraft reported a flashing laser in the approach path. The police was apprised of the incident.
