When GV Sanjay Reddy proposed that the upcoming Terminal 2 of Kempegowda Airport be designed around the theme of Bangalore as a 'garden city,' his architects asked him if he wanted something along the lines of Singapore's Changi Airport, which is famous for the greenery within. "I told them I had something else in mind," says the vice-chairman of GVK India. "Changi is an airport that contains gardens. In Bangalore, I want the gardens to contain the airport. That means landscaping the outside of the terminal rather than the inside."
The architect for Bangalore T2 will be Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), which also built Mumbai's T2, the other airport operated by GVK. One of the largest architectural firms in the world, SOM's portfolio of airport buildings includes terminal 3 at Changi, terminal 3 at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport and the much acclaimed Haj Terminal at King Abdulaziz Airport in Jeddah.
