Customs officer held for foreign currency racket

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad zonal unit of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Friday arrested a senior customs official in the Rs 2.2 crore foreign currency smuggling case. The assistant commissioner-rank officer, S S Pabana, currently posted at the Air Cargo Complex of the city airport was arrested after his statement was recorded by DRI officials on Friday evening. This is the sixth arrest in this case. Pabana was produced before a magistrate and sent to judicial custody. This is the first time DRI has arrested a senior customs official for involvement in a smuggling case.
"S S Pabana, posted as assistant commissioner at Air Cargo Complex in Ahmedabad airport played an active role in the smuggling of foreign currency which is an offence under the Customs Act, 1962. Accordingly Pabana was arrested," said a DRI official.
On Wednesday, DRI had arrested five people - including three women - Mohammad Waqar, Mohammad Azhar, Bushra Rahman, Roshni Khan and Rabia Khatoon, for attempting to smuggle unaccounted foreign currency worth Rs 2.20 crore out of the international terminal of the city airport. According to DRI sources, Bushra and Roshni were supposed to take the foreign currency (2,25,000 Saudi riyals and 2,50,000 euros) to Dubai on a SpiceJet flight.
