DIAL plans 4th runway at IGI by 2020, new terminal too

New Delhi: Plans are afoot to expand the IGI airport by constructing a fourth runway and creating additional, related infrastructure. For the runway, at least, the completion target is 2020.
DIAL submitted a plan regarding this to aviation secretary R N Choubey on Monday. Sources said the airstrip would come up parallel to runway 29, which became functional in September 2008, and would have the exact same length of 4,430 metres.
"DIAL has submitted a draft expansion plan to us. We will discuss the same internally with all departments and agencies concerned. Within a month, we will give them inputs on the modifications sought by the other agencies so that they can firm up a plan that is best suited to meet Delhi's growing needs," Choubey told TOI, adding that he didn't want a Mumbai-like situation (where demand far exceeds capacity) in Delhi.
