Fliers, brace for delays and higher fares

Major airports across the country will see partial closure of operations this year impacting passengers travelling to and from Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Trivandrum, Kolkata, Indore and Amritsar. A direct effect of this is going to be a hike in air fares as airlines will have to find ways to utilise their assets and find other profitable routes where aircraft can be deployed during this period.

While work at Calicut airport has already begun, a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) states that Mumbai airport will witness repair work starting mid-October. "The work will be carried out between 12 pm and 5pm on Mondays and Thursdays and will take about two months for completion," AAI's outgoing general manager aerodrome Jayant Dasgupta said.

"We will be re-carpeting runways using the latest technology to protect and preserve the existing surface. This repair will ensure safety and enhancement of friction and durability," stated a circular issued to the airlines by Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) last month.
