FlyDubai plane crash: Young couple from Kerala among 62 killed in Russia

Thiruvananthapuram: A young Kerala couple was among the 62 on board, who were killed in the FlyDubai air crash in the Southern Russia city of Rostov-on-Don on Saturday.

The Kerala victims were identified as Shyam Mohan, 27 and his wife Anju, 26. They belong to Vengola village near Perumbavoor in central Kerala’s Ernakulam district, official sources said.

Shyam and Anju have been in Russia, where Anju used to work as a nurse in an ayurvedic clinic. Married in November, 2014, they had been in Kerala for a two-month leave. The couple left for Russia on Thursday from Kochi to Dubai, from where they boarded the ill-fated, low-cost airline on Saturday early morning.
Anju has been working in Russia for a few years. After the marriage, Anju took her husband along with her to Russia. Shyam also got the nursing job at the clinic, recently.

Shyam’s father Mohan is a carpenter and mother Sheeja a house wife at Vengola village near Perumbavoor.

According to Flightradar24, the plane circled for about two hours before making another landing attempt. It said a Russian Aeroflot plane scheduled to land around the same time made three landing attempts but then diverted to another airport.

The powerful explosion pulverized the plane but investigators quickly recovered both flight recorders. The cause of the crash wasn’t immediately known, but officials and experts pointed at a sudden gust of wind as a possible reason.
