Gaya Airport land: stalemate continues

Gaya: With Bishunganj villagers refusing to accept the compensation amount for the acquisition of 70.2 acres of land for the expansion of the Gaya airport runway to facilitate bigger passenger and cargo plane landing/take off, stalemate on the issue continues.
Though the acquisition formalities were completed between 2009-2011 and land owners were offered compensation as per the provisions of law prevailing at the time of acquisition, the farmers now demand compensation as per the provisions of the Land Acquisition Act 2013 that guarantees compensation four times the market value of the land.
A few weeks back, Gaya District Magistrate Kumar Ravi, through an official letter addressed to the Principal Secretary Land Revenue, apprised the senior official about the problems being faced in the smooth execution of the airport development plan. The DM also sought guidelines from the Principal Secretary Revenue on the issue.
Gaya airport spread over 971 acres needs 100 acres more land to expand the length of the runway from the existing 2286 meters to 2886 meters. The present runway can at best accommodate Airbus 320 with an all economy class passenger capacity of 180.
