Govt. accused of neglecting Calicut airport

Kozhikode: The Malabar Development Council (MDC) has criticised the State government for not taking effective measures to acquire the required land for the expansion of the Calicut Airport.

C.E. Chakkunny, chairman, MDC, said here on Tuesday that the “step-motherly” treatment meted out to the Calicut Airport by the State government had resulted in the Airports Authority of India (AAI) deciding to discontinue the service of wide bodied aircraft.

The government had ignored the Calicut Airport in the State budget whereas the budgetary allocation for Kochi airport was Rs.100 crore and Kannur airport, Rs.14 crore, he said. He alleged that the government showed no interest to acquire the land near the Calicut Airport that had less population density and property rates cheaper than Kochi and Kannur.

Mr. Chakkunny said he had received a letter from A.K. Misra, Executive Director (Engineering), who had stated that it was essential that additional land was required for expansion of the runway.
