Inside story of AAI head removal

New Delhi: In a rare move, the Government sacked the Airports Authority of India Chairman Ravindra Kumar Srivastava, almost four years before his tenure was to end.

Though the Government did not specify any reason for his removal, insiders told Bureaucracy Today that the move to suspend Srivastava was taken after he allegedly began “arm-twisting” Industrialist Vivek Nair, Chairman of the Leela Ventures Pvt Ltd, as well as the AAI’s joint venture partners -- GMR and GVK -- for a CAG audit of the accounts books.

The sources also said that Nair and the GMR and the GVK top brass, who are “very close” to the higher echelons in the power corridor, complained about Srivastava’s alleged “extra arm-twisting” to the Civil Aviation Ministry. “The entire chain of events led to Srivastava’s termination,” the insider told Bureaucracy Today.

When contacted by Bureaucracy Today, Srivastava avoided any query saying, “I will call in five minutes.” The call, obviously, never came.

Insiders also inform Bureaucracy Today that the AAI’s various business moves are allegedly also under scanner for their “shoddy dealings”. “One such action is the AAI’s interest in renewing the lease of Leela hotel in Mumbai when the matter is sub-judice,” the source said.
