Losing Aircraft Tyre Scary, But not Grievous: Ex-pilot

Bengaluru: Even though an airplane losing one of its rear tyres as it took off from Kempegowda Airport sent chills down the spine, a retired pilot said that the incident was not a ‘grievous emergency’.

Retired Air Marshal B K Pandey told Express that though the pilot of the aircraft did a fine job by landing it without any problems, pilots are trained to cope with such situations during training.

“Any mechanical device can fail. Though such malfunctions should not occur, there might be several reasons that might have caused it,” he said.

From a pilot’s point of view, it is possible for an aircraft to land when a single wheel has fallen off. The risk while landing is that the remaining tyres could burst, resulting in complications, he added.

A SpiceJet plane ferrying passengers from KIA to Kolkata, took off around 6.30 pm on Tuesday.

One of the tyres in the landing gear of the Boeing aircraft, was loose and it fell  off at the runway while the plane was ascending.

Airport authorities were quick to spot the malfunction and cleared the debris that has fallen from the aircraft. Air Traffic Control was also informed about it, who in turn alerted the pilots.

The pilots succeeded in landing the plane at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata.
