Kozhikode: The campaign by some organisations to restore some major international flights to Calicut International Airport in Karipur seems to be losing steam.
There is confusion over the next course of action, after the Union Civil Aviation Ministry stated firmly that given the size and condition of the runway, safety will be compromised if wide-bodied aircraft are operated. The flights will have to wait till runway expansion.
What has added to their disappointment is Emirates, a large aircraft operator, closing its office at the airport.
The organisations see this as the beginning of a pullout by major airliners, even as the Airports Authority of India is speeding up the repairs to the runway.
“We cannot bring too much pressure to bear on the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (the regulator) when safety is stressed. We may have to discuss the issue with it in New Delhi. Beyond a point, any noise made from Kozhikode may not carry very far,” president of Malabar Chamber of Commerce C. Mohan said on Tuesday.
