Simhastha Kumbha: Air India to bolster fleet with 38 new aircraft

Bhopal: Cash-strapped national carrier, Air India, will expand its fleet by adding new Boeing and Airbus aircraft in January next year, besides launching new services to connect Bhopal with Mumbai and special flights from next month to connect Indore with Mumbai and Delhi to bolster tourist flow during Simhastha, which begins on April 22.
Talking to reporters in Bhopal on Tuesday, chairman and managing director of Air India, Ashwani Lohani, said six new Boeing-787, three Boeing-777 and 29 Airbus planes are being procured by Air India as a part of its expansion plan.
To a query on losses incurred by Air India, he said in 2015-15, losses were close Rs 5,800 crore. He, however, hastened to add "consolidation and growth has to go together".Lohani said after launching the 17-hour longest flight between Delhi and San Francisco, Air India will have a new flight connecting Delhi and Vienna from April this year. Besides, there are plans to operate in Africa and Spain.
When asked how he plans a turnaround of loss-making company, he said, "We have been working sincerely and efforts are on to overcome hurdles." Air India's Mumbai-Bhopal flight will take off from March 23. It will take off from Mumbai at 7.47 pm and reach Bhopal at 9.10 pm. It will return to Mumbai at 9.30 pm and land in Mumbai at 10.55 pm. Lohani said special Simhastha flights will operate from Mumbi and Delhi to Indore and are likely to start from April 21 or 22.
