criminal offence of cruelty to animals has been lodged against two people who were ferrying a pack of stray dogs from the residential complex of Airports Authority of India in Juhu. The two men, said the police, claimed that they had been hired to lead the dogs away from their original habitat. The Pawan Hans group also operates from this area.
Activist Bimlesh Navani, who has lodged the offence at Santacruz police station, said that they had learnt that at least 25 stray dogs which used to lurk around the complex which houses the former city airport had been taken away.
Navani said, "Dogs are territorial creatures. It is cruel and illegal to remove them from the area they live in. We have heard that the dogs were badly beaten and abandoned in places like Sion and Kurla."
Navani expressed hope that the police will investigate the case and initiate action against those involved in this act of cruelty.
