New Delhi: The minister is treading with caution, but his junior has thrown caution to the winds.
At stake is a decision fraught with implications: what name to give the country's new airports.
Junior aviation minister Mahesh Sharma has thrown his weight behind a proposal that new airports should be named after the cities they are located in - departing from a long tradition of naming airports after political icons.
An official close to the BJP minister said several party leaders had requested him to rename several airports, including Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport. "But this step would have led to a major controversy, so it was decided that the culture of naming airports after politicians should be stopped."
Not so fast, says Sharma's senior, civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju, a Telugu Desam Party MP. "The matter is still under consideration, there is nothing concrete yet," the cabinet minister said today.
