Chennai: During phase I of the modernisation of Chennai Airport, many cases of broken glass panel were reported. Now, as the modernisation programme enters the second phase, Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials are confident that glass panel breakage will be a thing of the past.
Airport director Deepak Shastri said: “We will leave the design to our project team. Glass will have a ‘dominant’ role to play in the structure of the terminals in the phase II project. This time, of course, we will ensure there are no design flaws or any other issues.”
The plan for phase II includes new terminals, airside development, walkalator and construction of new bays, at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,000 crore.
Mr. Shastri said the project management consultant will soon be finalised after which the design and structure will be decided upon.
The first phase of the modernisation of Chennai airport, also at a cost of Rs. 2,000 crore, was launched in January 2013; ever since the terminals were opened for public use, there were reports of collapsing glass panels.
