Air India may soon operate flights within Gujarat

Ahmedabad: Air India may soon operate intra-state flights on routes such as Bhavnagar-Amreli and Bhuj-Ahmedabad as part of its services in the state. The national carrier has given a proposal to the Gujarat government to begin intra-state flight services on select routes. The state civil aviation ministry has also written to Jet Airways and invited a proposal for intra-state service from them.
Air India is eyeing connectivity among tier-II cities as well as their connectivity with cities like Ahmedabad.
This is the second attempt by the state government to start an intra-state flight service. The earlier tie-up was with Maritime Energy Heli Air Services Ltd (MehAir), which failed after three months of operation.
Saurabh Patel, civil aviation minister, Gujarat said, "We have received the proposal from Air India for intra-state flight services, and we are working on it. It will take some time to materialize." According Air India's proposal, the airlines aims to recover half of the operational cost through passenger traffic on certain routes in the state. For the remaining half, it will need viability gap funding (VGF) and state government's support.
