Plea to use Salem Airport effectively

Salem: The Confederation of Indian Industry here has urged the Union Civil Aviation Ministry to take effective steps for the resumption of passenger and cargo services from Salem Airport.

The Salem Airport was established in 1993 and was operated for some time by a private airline. After a gap of 16 years, the Kingfisher Airlines introduced passenger service in the Salem – Chennai sector from 2009 – 11. This service too was stopped abruptly, a memorandum presented by a CII delegation to R.N. Choubey, Secretary, Union Ministry of Civil Aviation, in new Delhi on Tuesday.

The memorandum said that at present, companies such as JSW Steel Limited, Kalyan Jewellers, TVS Group, Thriveni Group and others are frequently using the airport with their privately owned aircrafts for the visit of their executives in Salem region.

Chartered aircrafts are also operated from and to this airport. All this type of operation is likely to grow at a faster pace in the coming years due to increase in the number of companies that owned and chartered aircrafts.

Salem Airport constructed and operated by AAI is an all weather operational airport suitable for operation of ATR72, B-737-200 type of aircrafts with apron to park two aircrafts.
