Satellite phone spells trouble for US citizen

Kochi: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) arrested an American citizen on Thursday at Cochin airport for carrying and using a satellite phone, banned in India.
CISF arrested Kruss Daniel Morton (65), a resident of Castlewood Ln, Deerfield, Illinois, USA, after the phone was found in his possession during a routine baggage screening at the airport.
Morton, who was in Kochi along with his wife and a group of friends, arrived last week and visited popular tourist locations such as Kumarakom and Munnar.
The accused was intercepted by CISF around 5.50pm on Thursday. He was about to board a flight back to the US along with his wife and a family friend. He was handed over to Nedumbassery police.
Officials said that the foreigner had arrived in Kochi on April 10.
Police said that the accused claimed to be a doctor and director of a hospital in the US. He said he brought the phone fearing that he would be unreachable over his cell phone in Kerala. He also claimed that he was unaware of the Indian rule, restricting the use of satellite phone.
