Mumbai: The developer, who will be selected to build Navi Mumbai international airport by October, is expected to start work by December, revealed state officials.
Crucial work on flattening hillocks and changing the course of Ulve river for the aviation project could start soon. On Monday, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis gave the go-ahead for the final phase of tendering.
Cidco, the nodal agency for the airport development, expects the contractors for the pre-development work like levelling hillocks, diverting the river and shifting overhead wires to be in place in next couple of months.
"We expect the selection of the main airport developer, after the financial bidding process gets over, by October. The developer will be able to start construction by the year end. By then the groundwork will be done," said a senior Cidco official.
While clearing the proposals on Monday, the chief minister insisted on completion of the airport's first phase by 2019. The new airport is being built to reduce the congestion at Mumbai airport. If all goes according to plan, then the Navi Mumbai international airport should be ready by 2030 and should have the capacity for handling 70 million passengers annually.
