Mumbai: The Customs department had imposed a penalty of Rs 4.75 lakh on Ashish Patel for bringing in undeclared gold worth Rs 7.38 lakh last September. The Customs clarified that they had not arrested Patel as the value of the gold with him was less than Rs 20 lakh.
The Customs had intercepted Patel and Sunil Gheewala at international airport on September 9, in two separate instances after they arrived from abroad. They were collectively carrying undeclared gold worth Rs 15 lakh. They were let off after they paid the penalties.
There is government circular that says there is no need to arrest a person bringing undeclared gold less than Rs 20 lakh but they can be penalized. The Customs can arrest them if they are repeat offenders.
