Kolkata: With central intelligence agencies raising alarm over the possibility of hijack of aircraft operating in at least four sectors from Kolkata, a special counter-hijack team from Delhi arrived in the city on Wednesday to carry out a series of drills.
According to a MHA official, the aim of the exercise - the first one of its kind to be held in the country - is to evolve a standard operating procedure (SOP) and develop better co-ordination between security agencies like the National Security Guard (NSG), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), civil police, airline staff and officials from the civil aviation ministry.
"The counter-hijack team from the NSG is already in Kolkata and has held meetings and done some ground work. Some activity is likely to be held at the airport from late on Wednesday when an aircraft will be made available to them. The major part of the exercise will be held between Thursday and Sunday. The sectors will be selected on a random basis from the susceptible ones and measures will be worked out to thwart hijack attempts. The latest strategies adopted by terror outfits globally are being kept in mind," informed an MHA official said.
