Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said the final site for construction of an international airport in Pune would be chosen in the next three weeks.
Fadnavis, who chaired a meeting of American companies and state government officials at Chakan on Wednesday, also said efforts were on to increase the capacity of the existing airport in Pune.
While responding to a query about the proposed international airport in Pune, Fadnavis said three sites had been identified as proposed location for the airport and the director of Airports Authority of India (AAI) would come for inspection of the same within the next one week.
The chief minister said the existing airport at Lohegaon was being expanded for more flights and talks were on over the issue with the Ministry of Defence.
The industry in Pune has long been demanding an international airport for the city. The Lohegaon airport, being a military airport, has been facing operational constraints with certain hours being off-limits for civilian flights. Also, travelling to Mumbai for international flights has been a major problem due to traffic jams on the expressway. Protests by farmers had led to the cancellation of an earlier site in Khed taluka.
