Ahmedabad: When it comes to smuggling in gold via the Ahmedabad airport, national carrier Air India is the most preferred airline, the government reply to an RTI application by a city-based activist said. The customs department revealed that the national carrier was followed by low-cost carriers SpiceJet and Air Arabia.
According to the information available, 62 smugglers were arrested by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs department between July 2014 and January 2016. Of these, 20 smugglers arrived in Ahmedabad on Air India flights, 15 used Spicejet and 14 flew Air Arabia. Emirates Airlines and Qatar Airways had brought in five smugglers each, while three had flown Jet Airways.
The AIU was formed in July 2014 to clamp down on the rising flow of smuggled gold at the international terminal of the city airport after central government imposed a 10% duty in June 2013. Between July 2014 and January 2016, AIU seized 63.15kg of gold from smugglers, worth Rs 16.22 crore.
