Fury in Juhu as the trees fly off airport

Yesterday this newspaper reported the findings of a survey that said there is only one single tree in 16.5 acres of Bhendi Bazaar. Now up north, residents of Juhu-Vile Parle Development Scheme (JVPD) are reporting massive and unsanctioned tree-cutting by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Author Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi, formerly a Bombay Boy arrived from Goa, his home in recent years, earlier this week to find eight-year-old trees as high as 15 feet chopped off despite being part of a green zone. The resident of Kapole Society which abuts Juhu Airport told this newspaper that the trees and shrubs had been growing on what was once the second largest sweet water lake after Powai Lake. "About 10 years ago, the authorities started killing it systematically.

They reclaimed a part of it and then filled it up with debris. Later the trees started growing on it," Shanghvi said.

Juhu airport director M K Bimal denied Shanghvi's allegations that the 384-acre airport area was part of a green zone. The mistake in the DP, he said, had been rectified. "It is now part of the Juhu airport and not a green zone. All action taken (cutting of shrubs and trees) is keeping in mind the flying activity."
