Panaji: Goa international airport is likely to increase the number of aircraft-parking bays as the state government is in the process of sending a proposal to the defence ministry to release more land to construct new parking bays in view of the eighth BRICS summit to be hosted in Goa on October 15 and 16, 2016.
BRICS is an association of five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia , India, China and South Africa .
At present eight aircraft can park at the Dabolim Airport and state government is intent on constructing four more parking bays.
Speaking to TOI, chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar said that many aircraft fly in to Goa but since there is no availability of parking bays, the flights are flown to Mumbai for parking. "We want to increase the parking bays at Dabolim airport, and as the BRICS summit is to be held in Goa, this (increasing parking bays) can be done faster," he said. He also said that since Goa is hosting the summit, it would be easier to convince the defence ministry to release more land for additional parking bays.
