After a spat over its trees and a proposed beautification plan, Juhu beach has now become a bone of contention for the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the local police over the lamp posts in the area.
While the local police have urged the BMC to increase lighting on the beach, AAI is opposing it owing to lamp posts becoming an obstruction in the path of aircraft flying into the city. In fact, the AAI has asked the BMC to remove all 11 lamp posts in the area for the same reason.
But the local police are of the opinion that poor lighting on the beach is posing grave problems for law and order in the area. The AAI wants the BMC to remove five coconut trees, 11 electric poles and a hanging cable since they obstruct the flight path. The issue of bad lighting at Juhu beach was discussed at a meeting of the Airport Advisory Committee, led by BJP MP Poonam Mahajan on Wednesday.
Mumbai Mirror had earlier reported how the plan to beautify Juhu beach had become the subject of an ugly spat between AAI and local politicians. AAI had raised objections to any changes to the beach, saying that it would hinder the planned extension of Juhu airport's runway into the sea -- a long-debated project that now seems almost certain for take-off.
