More land options on radar for airport expansion

Pune: The district administration, along with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), is considering to utilize additional 25 to 27 acres of land of the Indian Oil Corporation Limited near the Lohegaon airport for its further expansion after the defence ministry's approval for using its 15.84 acres for the purpose.
District collector Saurabh Rao on Tuesday said the issue was recently discussed with the district guardian minister Girish Bapat and then with chief minister Devendra Fadnavis during his recent visit to the city. Fadnavis has given his consent to work on the proposal, Rao said.
He said, "Of the 30 acres, the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) is at present using about three acres of land. The option can be explored if IOCL's unit can be shifted to a corner. It would allow utilization of the remaining land for the airport expansion. The state government would hold discussions with the Union ministry seeking the land for expansion."
The Lohegaon airport requires additional land to expand infrastructure and passenger amenities. Recently, defence minister Manohar Parrikar sanctioned 15.84 acres of defence land for expansion. Rao said a master plan pertaining to the expansion of the airport facilities had been finalized.
