Almora: The state government has applied for operational licence to the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) after an expert panel of the Union environment ministry gave go-ahead to the Naini-Saini airstrip located in the Pithoragarh district.
Speaking to TOI, HC Semwal, district magistrate Pithoragarh, said, "The state government has already applied for licence to operate from the airstrip. The application is pending with the DGCA right now. Once we get the green signal flights will start and will cater to commuters to Dehradun and Pantnagar."
The government is also in talks with four airline operators, who are interested to commence flights from the airstrip. They have also submitted proposals to the government, added Semwal.
A trial run on the airstrip has also been completed successfully which can accommodate ATR-42 aircrafts. The strip was constructed in 1991 for administrative purpose, however, poor condition of the runway and lack of infrastructure prevented its use. It was later decided by the state government to develop the airstrip and use it for commercial activities.
