Police to probe author’s AAI tree-hacking plaint

Mumbai: Filing a case against a murder of a different kind, author Siddharth Shanghvi on Wednesday sought police action against the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for having illegally cut down trees last week.
On June 4, it was noticed that a number of trees were cut on the AAI land, which is a green zone, said Shanghvi's complaint addressed to the senior inspector of Santacruz police station. It added that cutting trees in a green zone is a non-bailable offence under the Environment Protection Act. The letter also claimed that the trees were cut without BMC permission. "This is a grevious offence, we ask the official concerned to take strict action," the letter said.
Santacruz senior police inspector Shantanu Pawar said based on the seriousness of the application, an inquiry is being carried out before registering a case. "I have to go through the application before deciding the course of action," he said. Shanghvi told TOI that the inquiry should not be delayed as the AAI has started removing the trunks and branches of the hacked trees.
