Smugglers use RGIA ground staff to escape customs check

Hyderabad: The arrest of an Air India SATS (AISATS) employee by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths for smuggling gold at the RGI Airport on Friday clearly indicates how gold smugglers have managed to circumvent the system and lure the ground crew.
On Friday, the DRI sleuths kept watch on a passenger who had arrived by an Emirates flight from Dubai. Near the aero-bridge, he handed over 28 gold bars (weighing 3.26 kilo) wrapped in black duct tape to a 26-year-old AISATS ground-handling staffer. They nabbed the two and remanded them in judicial custody on Saturday.
It was the first time that the DRI nabbed ground-handling staff of AISATS, a joint venture between Air India and SATS Limited.
Since January 2016, the DRI has nabbed two employees - Srinath and Aslam of Menzies Bobba ground-handling services at the RGI Airport - for attempting to smuggle out the yellow metal after collecting it from 'carriers' near the aero-bridge.
