Upgrade of radar to make airport safer will be completed by June-end

Mumbai: Taking the possibility of an accident due to collision always near certain aircraft parking areas of Terminal 2 at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport seriously, the upgrade of surface movement radar (SMR) will be completed by June-end.

According to airport insiders, at present, aircraft movement at the spot is not clearly visible to air traffic controllers from the new ATC tower in Vile Parle. The upgrade will put more sensors near the area to make it safer for aircraft movement.
"The work is just about to get complete. After that any movement (aircraft) will be clearly visible on the computer screens inside the ATC tower. It will improve safety at the airside," said a senior CNS official. CNS (Communication, Navigation and Surveillance) department is mandated with the development and maintenance of air traffic-related infrastructure at the airport.

Sources said the aircraft parking area in question mainly houses planes of Air India and a private carrier.
