Air India chief fast flyer for railway board top post

New Delhi: The race for the post of the chairman of the Railway Board hots up with Air India CMD Ashwani Lohani, a railway service officer, being the frontrunner for the topmost post in railways. Also in the line is Member Staff Pradeep Kumar, but according to the grapevine, Lohani’s stakes are high.
Railway Board chairman A K Mittal retires on July 31 and the Ministry of Railways is on the lookout for a person who can turn around the railways. “Member Staff will be retiring in another 11 months and Railways would need someone (CRB) who stays for some time to push reforms and put Railways back on track. Lohani still has over two-and-a-half years to retire in December 2018,” said sources.
According to sources, PM Modi is miffed with the slow pace of progress in Railways and wants to put in place an officer capable of bringing a change in Railways. Lohani was handpicked by Modi in September last year to revive the sagging fortune of national carrier Air India.
