Air Kerala not on agenda: Pinarayi

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said that Air Kerala, conceived by the previous United Democratic Front government to provide affordable flights from Kerala to the Gulf, is “not on the agenda of the Left Democratic Front government”.

He was addressing a press meet in New Delhi after meeting Union Minister for Civil Aviation P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju on Friday.

On the reported move to set up an airport at Aranmula, Mr. Vijayan said the government was against the airport coming up on agriculture land. “We stand by the earlier LDF decision. We are not against setting up of the airport,” he added.

Mr. Vijayan said the State had informed the Centre that it would hand over the land needed for the extension of the runway of the Karipur airport in Kozhikode to facilitate landing of bigger aircraft.

The Centre had been approached to issue direction to the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to give nod for landing of bigger aircraft during the interim. “Bigger aircraft to Karipur were stopped to take up work on the runway. But the DGCA has not given nod for bigger aircraft even after the work is completed. This will affect the airport,” he said.
