Airport Authority of India to make fresh appeal for land

Thiruvananthapuram: The Airport Authority of India (AAI) would once again request the government to begin acquisition of the land allotted to the authority in Chackai here. A meeting in this regard will be held between chief secretary S M Vijayanand and AAI officials on Friday.
The expansion of Thiruvananthapuram international airport with more immigration and departure counters, conveyors and aerobridges, fuel farm and cargo area requires 82 acres. However, only 18 acres were sanctioned by the previous UDF government, as per a government order issued in September 2014. However, despite repeated requests and a meeting with MLAs and ministers in November last year, the government is yet to initiate the acquisition procedures of the allotted land.
According to airport director George G Tharakan, with the change in the ruling party, it was expected that the government would take necessary steps. "Since 2014 we have been demanding the state government to begin the land acquisition work. The delay has affected the development activities at the airport. Airlines have been demanding for more space to open new immigration counters to clear rush," said Tharakan.
