New Delhi: A banking consortium led by the State Bank of India moved the Supreme Court on Thursday against businessman Vijay Mallya for not complying with the court’s order to disclose his assets. Mr. Mallya’s grounded Kingfisher Airlines owes the consortium of 17 banks over Rs. 9,000 crore.
Attorney-General Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the banks along with advocate Robin Ratnakar David, in an urgent mentioning, asked a Bench of Justices Kurian Joseph and Rohinton Nariman for an urgent hearing in the matter.
Mr. Rohatgi submitted that the details provided by Mr. Mallya, who skipped the country to the United Kingdom and refuses to return, about his assets is vague. These details were provided by the businessman in a sealed cover in April 2016 on the orders of the apex court. The court had then passed on the confidential details to the banks in a bid to help them in the recovery process. The Bench agreed to hear the banks and scheduled the case for hearing on July 18.
