Both pilots of AN-32 aircraft from Haryana

Chandigarh:  Sitting at his Sector 3 residence in Rohtak, Krishan Nandal is still hopeful that his son Pankaj Nandal will return home safe. “I know my son. He would have done his best to save the plane and passengers before it went down. We pray for all on board the plane that they are alive.”

Pankaj Nandal, 25-year-old Flying Officer, was one of the pilots of the ill-fated AN-32 transport plane of the Indian Air Force that went missing four days ago with 29 passengers on board. The second pilot, Flight Lieutenant Pushpender Singh Badesra (26), also belonged to Haryana.

“Pankaj did his B.Sc in Aeronautical Engineering from Chennai and his schooling in Rohtak. He got selected into IAF in December 2013 through Combined Defence Services Examination,” says Krishan Nandal, who retired from Indian Air Force in 2001. The family originally belonged to Nandal village in Rohtak.

Pankaj last visited home three months ago. “His marriage was fixed for November 13 this year, and both families had started preparations for the wedding,” said his father.

“He spoke to me on Thursday before he left for Port Blair and discussed with me the arrangements for the marriage,” Nandal said, adding that this was his first posting with the 33 squadron based at Sulur in Tamil Nadu.
