DGCA probe; 40 overworked pilots grounded

Overworked pilots once again made the news after 40 SpiceJet pilots were grounded for flying more than their allotted flying hours.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), a probe has revealed violations of the prescribed flight and duty timings. "The inquiry report has been sent to my office and suitable action will be initiated immediately," said DGCA chief M Sathiyavathy.
The Flight and Duty Time Limitations and Rest Requirements (FDTL) specify the maximum flight duty period in a day, with sub-categories such as limitations for flying hours, rest periods, staff-on-duty travel and number of landings allowed for pilots and cabin crew.
A DGCA official said, "Such flying can result in fatigue and prove to be dangerous. Exhausted pilots have caused several fatal plane crashes in the past."
The violations were found on SpiceJet's Amritsar-Dubai and Dubai-Calicut flights, operated by the same set of pilots in one day. "To operate the morning flight from Amritsar, pilots took an early-morning flight from Delhi to Amritsar. This is part of the duty hours of the pilots. Their flight from Dubai would reach Calicut late that night," an official said.
