Domestic air traffic grows by 22.5% in January-June; IndiGo continues to lead in market share

The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) today said that the country’s local air traffic has risen by 22.5% for the period from January 2016 to June 2016. The passengers carried by domestic airlines during January to June 2016 duration were 475.79 lakh as against 388.33 lakh during the corresponding period of previous year. According to the data released by DGCA, Indigo dominated the domestic market with a traffic share of 37.9%. While Jet Airways + Jet Lite had a market share of 19.1%, that of Spicejet was 12.7%. Air India had a share of 15.5%.
“The passenger load factor in the month of June 2016 has slightly decreased compared to previous month primarily due to the end of tourist season,” says DGCA. On-Time Performance (OTP) of scheduled domestic airlines has been computed for four metro airports viz. Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. In this, Vistara has emerged as a clear winner, followed by IndiGo and Jet Airways + Jet Lite. The overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for the month of June 2016 has been 0.96%, with Trujet at 21.73% and the lowest being IndiGo at 0.20%. The reason behind maximum cancellations is technical.
During June 2016, a total of 788 passenger related complaints had been received by the scheduled domestic airlines. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried for the month of June 2016 has been 1.0. Air India’s complaints per 10,000 stood at the highest of 2.2 and that of Vistara was lowest at 0.2. At 30.3%, customer Service was the biggest reason for passenger complaints.
