Financial troubles ground govt air ambulance project

Thiruvananthapuram: The LDF government has decided not to go ahead with the air ambulance project mooted by the previous UDF govt. The decision comes following the findings that it will not be cost effective.
In March this year the then chief minister Oommen Chandy had launched the air ambulance project for promoting organ donation in the state. A memorandum of understanding for the project was also signed between Kerala Network of Organ Sharing (KNOS) and Rajiv Gandhi Aviation academy.
However, after the LDF government came to power a feasibility study into the project was done and it was found that it was not a viable project. ``It is not going to work out since it has been found not cost effective and viable,'' said Rajeev Sadanandan, additional chief secretary (health).
The government is of the view that since there is no daily requirement of such an ambulance it would be much feasible to operate the Navy flights for this purpose like the way we did in shifting organs on Tuesday, said the health secretary.
