Fliers duck for cover as landing glitch mistaken for terror attack

Mumbai: Eighty-three-odd passengers, most of whom were returning fresh after holidaying in Thailand, were in for the scare of their lives when the aircraft carrying them landed at Mumbai airport with more than just a few bumps and shakes. The high frequency of terror attacks of the current times did not help matters.

Therefore, it was not surprising when the passengers reacted by ducking under their seats and calling up their near and dear ones - thinking that that was the last time they would get to speak to them.

But after at least five minutes of paranoia, the passengers finally realised that it was merely a case of a hydraulic failure that caused the bumpy landing.

The Bangkok Airways flight PG-733, carrying the 83 passengers and nine crew members, had to be finally towed away. But this managed to hold the runway at ransom for about 20 minutes, during which, all incoming flights were diverted to the secondary runway.

Raunak Kumar, who was returning from a holiday in the seaside city of Pattaya, said, "As the aircraft remained stuck on the runway, the passengers assumed that some gunshots had been fired. Momentarily, we assumed that there was something terribly wrong, and so we unbuckled our seatbelts and ducked."
