Mumbai airport regularly featured in the list of five airports with most flight delays in the world last week, and managed to improve its standing only on Monday when it was ranked 15th.
Last month, three of every 10 incoming flights arrived late because of congestion and other problems. Flight punctuality hit a three-month low in June, according to details shared by the airport operator MIAL.
On Monday, 63 per cent of the expected flights were delayed, while 95 per cent of outbound aircraft took off after their scheduled time. The average delay for incoming planes was 19 minutes, while that for aircraft flying out of Mumbai was 35 minutes.
Flightradar24, a Swedish internet firm that tracks air traffic in real time, ranks airport where operations are behind schedule.
According to Mumbai Air Traffic Control (ATC), air traffic congestion had led to a higher holding time for incoming aircraft. In aviation, holding is a manoeuvre designed to delay an aircraft that is a few minutes away from landing. The ATC asks the pilot to circle around when the runway is not free, the weather is poor or there are multiple flights awaiting clearance.
"On July 4, a GoAir flight from Srinagar had to remain on hold for 40 minutes before being granted permission to land in Mumbai," an ATC official said.
