Harrowing day for air passengers

New Delhi: Passengers had a harrowing time at Indira Gandhi International Airport here on Tuesday as bad weather lead to the diversion of 11 flights and delayed scores of others by one to two hours. The resultant crowding and chaos at the domestic terminal only added to the passengers’ miseries.

The trouble began around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, with an overcast sky and presence of rain-bearing clouds near Delhi, particularly on the flight path. Between 10.20 a.m. and 3 p.m., three GoAir flights, three IndiGo flights, two Jet Airways flights, two Air India flights and one SpiceJet flight had to be diverted to Jaipur, Lucknow and Chandigarh airports.

“The problem was not due to the rain since the airport received 11 mm of rain, the wind speed was not very high and visibility too was at 1,100 metres. At the surface, there were no problems, but the conditions were not conducive for landing,” said R.K. Jenamani, Director-in-Charge, IGI Airport weather unit.

“The problem was due to cloud-related turbulence and wind shear factor. There was presence of clouds going high right on the flight path about 30 km from Delhi. Apart from this, the airport also witnessed thunder storms around 2 p.m.”

As a result, not only were arrivals delayed by about two hours, even departures were held up due to congestion at the airport.
